CASA DE ESPERANZA DE LOS NINOS

Casa de Esperanza, “the House of Hope for Children”, is a safe place for young indigent children, ages 0-6, who are in crisis due to abuse, neglect, or the effects of the HIV virus. Casa provides residential, medical, and psychological care according to the needs of each child. Counseling is provided to the parents in appropriate situations.

Spindletop has contributed to Casa de Esperanza since 1994; however, the Group Volunteer Award was presented to Spindletop because of its generous donations from the Spindletop Cook Team Volunteers! Every other year, Casa de Esperanza hosts a “Birthday Party” on its campus in celebration of the Casa children and their foster/adoptive families. The Spindletop volunteers prepare and donate the delicious barbecue, hot dogs and chicken wings for each event!

AWARDED 2006 COMMENDATION FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE
BY
HOUSTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Houston Independent School District honored and recognized Spindletop International and the Co. A Texas Rangers in 2006 for their donation to the HISD EvenStart Program in 2005. The funds were raised during the annual Texas Rangers Co. “A” Golf Tournament and donated to Spindletop. Together, Spindletop and the Texas Rangers selected the EvenStart program as the beneficiary of these funds.

EvenStart is a program within HISD which recognizes the importance of literacy for very young children and the role parents play in supporting reading skills. Books were purchased for nine HISD schools and were available in multiple languages including English, Spanish and Vietnamese. This gift has had a far-reaching impact, both by supporting literacy and by bringing families together in the shared activity of reading.

EvenStart is a national literacy program designed to help break the cycle of poverty by offering free early-childhood education, adult literacy, and parenting courses to low-income families. It became a part of HISD in 1993.

HISD Texas Rangers Lt. LC Wilson and Captain Tony Leal, along with Constance White of Spindletop, present a check to the HISD Foundation for the purchase of books for the EvenStart Program. The funds were raised during the 2005 Texas Ranger Company “A” Golf Tournament.

BY THE
YMCA OF GREATER HOUSTON

Every year, the YMCA of Greater Houston recognizes a corporate partner which has made outstanding contributions to the YMCA of Greater Houston. The James H. Galloway Award, was presented to Spindletop Charities, Inc. for 2007. James H. Galloway was also highly involved in the YMCA programs, serving as its chairman of YMCA’s Association Board of Directors from 1970-1973. This award was instituted in 1991 following his death. It is interesting to note that in 1977, thirty years ago, Mr. Galloway was presented the Mr. Spindletop Award, honoring his dedication to the oil and gas industry!

Since 1999, Spindletop has supported the mission and work of the MD Anderson Family YMCA. Most recently, the Spindletop funds were used for its Computer Learning Lab, the Partners Scholarship Fund, and purchasing new childcare buses.

As a result of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the Port Arthur YMCA suffered extreme damage, and Spindletop responded immediately by helping to rebuild the Y’s infrastructure; replacing the youth lockers, playground equipment and computers. In 2007, Spindletop continued to aide in Port Arthur YMCA’s recovery efforts by donating funds to purchase a 14-passenger van.
